Why it's worth it: Discreet matte black that all but disappears in a dark bedroom — for readers who like their late-night kit understated. It's Lizia: the original one-handed book light, page holder and bookmark in one — made in France and owned by more than 100,000 readers there.

  • Read one-handed — holds your book open, so your other hand is free for the mug, the handrail or the duvet
  • Lights the page, not the room — a warm LED that's bright enough to read by and dim enough that your partner sleeps through it
  • 25 g and pocket-sized — folds flat into the book as your bookmark, so it's always where you left off
  • Rechargeable — up to 5 hours of reading per charge, via the Micro-USB cable in the box
  • Made in France — assembled in an ESAT workshop in Brittany that employs people with disabilities

Reading in bed, finally done right

Most book lights clamp onto the cover, add weight and throw a cold beam across half the room. Lizia does the opposite. It's light enough to forget you're holding it, it keeps the pages open so you can read with one hand, and its warm LED is aimed at the page — no thumb shadow, no glare, and no waking the person next to you.

Three things, one 25-gram object

A reading light. A page holder that keeps anything from a mass-market paperback to a heavy hardback open without marking the pages or the spine. And when you're done, it folds flat into the book as your bookmark, ready for the next night. It's made of nylon — light and hard to break — and charges with the Micro-USB cable in the box for up to five hours of flicker-free light.

Made in France, assembled in an ESAT workshop

Lizia is made in western France and assembled in an ESAT in Brittany — a French workshop that employs people with disabilities. It's a patented design that won a Lépine award, one of France's most respected invention prizes, and was backed on M6's Qui veut être mon associé ?, the French Dragons' Den. More than 100,000 readers in France own one, and Lizia is rated 4.3 out of 5 across 323 reviews on Trustpilot. Maison Pont brings the very same product to the UK, from UK stock.

Questions

Will it wake my partner?
No — that's the point. The warm LED is directed at the page rather than the room, so it reads clearly on the page and stays dim from the other side of the bed.

Does it work with hardbacks?
Yes. It holds anything from a mass-market paperback to a heavy hardback open, without damaging the pages or the spine.

How long does the battery last?
Up to 5 hours of reading per charge. Recharge it with the Micro-USB cable included in the box.

Is this the same Lizia sold in France?
Yes — the same patented product from the same French maker. Maison Pont is the official UK stockist, so it ships from UK stock with no customs charges.

Is it a good gift for a reader?
It's the one they'll actually use: small, useful every night and made in France. It comes in five colours.

A few flaws but practical overall

I bought it because I didn't want to wait until October for the new version - the issues I mention will probably be fixed on that. From the first use, although I like the object, I noticed (as many have) that the lamp presses uncomfortably on the top of the thumb. I also regret that it charges via micro-USB, now widely seen as outdated, rather than USB-C. The bar is indeed too short for books larger than a paperback - again, something I expect will be resolved on the new version. Lastly, using it as a bookmark is really pointless - a big block sticking out of the book isn't practical and can easily fall out; that was obvious from the photos, and like most people it's not why I ordered it. But for the genuinely original idea - there's nothing else quite like the Lizia for holding a book open one-handed - and the fact that it's French, I still really like it.

Handy, but only for light paperbacks

Works well on light books (paperbacks). On larger, heavier books it's tricky, as it means keeping your finger pressed down constantly to get the light. In short, effective on light books for reading standing up, especially on public transport.

Good idea, needs refining

It isn't made for larger thumbs - it's painful because it squeezes so much, and within two days the joint cracked. The light shines on your nail more than on the book. On the plus side it holds the book open well, though you have to lift it each time you turn the page. So there's a good idea here, but it needs improving.

Excellent value for money

A really nice surprise with this Lizia reading light! It's practical, well thought out and genuinely comfortable to use, especially for reading one-handed. The light is soft and lights the page well without straining your eyes or disturbing those around you. The 3-in-1 system is a real plus: light, book holder and bookmark all in one compact, lightweight accessory. For the price the value is very good, and it feels solid and useful day to day. I'd recommend it without hesitation to anyone who loves reading, especially in the evening or while travelling.

Well-designed and very practical

Great reading light - very practical to use and very compact. Works perfectly, lighting the book just enough for comfortable, discreet reading.

Great reading accessory

I love it - I'd had my eye on it for ages. The Lizia is a great gift for yourself or for others! A real ally for reading, especially in the evening. Pleasantly surprised by the finish; the design is very ergonomic for a reading accessory and the colours are soft and pastel. Can't wait to use it long-term. Great value for money!

A must-have for night-time readers

The Lizia lighted reading ring is a clever, genuinely useful little object. I'd already used handmade reading rings, but this one is far better. The pluses: it combines two essentials for evening reading - holding your book one-handed and aiming the light exactly where you're reading. You can even use it without the light; to use the light you just charge it first (a USB/Micro-USB cable is included, though not the plug). I tried it on three book sizes - paperback, A5 hardback and a graphic novel - and it works, though naturally the bigger the book the more your hand tires. The minus: I'm more doubtful about the bookmark function, which is part of the sales pitch - I don't find it really suited to that. A lovely, reasonably priced gift for the readers in your life, or for yourself - and the person beside you in bed will be grateful too, since you can read without disturbing them.

Practical, but not ideal for every book

The idea behind this reading light is really nice, and I like how discreet it is. The light is well judged - soft enough not to tire your eyes and without disturbing others. The compact format is handy, you can take it anywhere, and the fact it's made in France is great. That said, after several uses I noticed some limits. On large paperbacks it struggles to stay in place, and the light doesn't always cover the whole page - it's almost impossible to hold a big book one-handed with the lamp. And while it feels comfortable at first, holding it with your thumb becomes uncomfortable after a while. For short reads it's fine, but over longer sessions less so. Still a good alternative to standard lamps, with a few things to improve.
